5 Best Instagram Accounts to Follow for New Potters

With so many pottery instagram accounts lingering in the internet universe, it’s hard to know who you should follow. Fear not. Whether you are a new potter or an expert pottery professor making plates for the Queen, these instagram accounts will not disappoint.

@michelle_wen_artist

From a pottery point of view, Michelle Wen can do no wrong. From a likability perspective, Michelle Wen can also do no wrong. This potter’s instagram is the perfect blend of inspirational, educational and entertaining. She offers in-depth tutorials for beginner to intermediate potters with helpful and hilarious commentary.

In addition to the above, she also masterfully creates a wide range of styles and forms. She is an expert thrower and skilled hand-builder and never seems to create the same pot twice.

@hsinchuenlin

Another masterful potter to follow is Hsin-Chuen Lin. Even through the 2D world of Instagram, you can tell his work is delicate, refined and beautifully crafted. He offers a huge volume of throwing tutorials which he previews on his instagram and offers more in-depth versions on his Youtube channel. He showcases different decoration techniques that are conceptually simple yet visually complex. One of his signature styles utilizes sgaffito and chattering techniques.

@turn.studio

Under the business name Turn Studio, Kenny Sing showcases the limitless potential of stencils as well as the beauty of geometry and symmetry in ceramics. From the computer to the wheel, Kenny gifts his audience his entire process on how he creates such beautiful and elaborate ‘negative space’ pieces, all carved by hand.

@melissamayapottery

Melissa Maya works wonders both on and off the wheel. Melissa mirrors forms she creates on the wheel and pinches a lump of clay into the same form. Although similar, the hand built forms are so beautifully organic, emphasizing her finger prints and consequently, her connection to the medium. Even on her thrown pieces, she keeps finger prints in the glaze to show the true making process and connect the end-user to the maker.

Furthermore, her instagram offers great content for potters interested in pinching, handle making and slip trailing.

@oldforgecreations

Old Forge Creations is somewhat of a pottery instagram celebrity and for good reason. He creates fantastic videos with excellent production value and takes great pride in precision in his craft. If you’re looking to incorporate more measured techniques into your pottery practice, from a rundown on mixing small batches of glaze for test tiles, applying coloured slip or throwing with a gauge, he offers comprehensive content on all this and more.
